Rome, 6 September (LaPresse) – "I listened to Mattarella's speech, in which he raises some important questions, wondering why there is also a very critical attitude towards Europe. Be careful, if, like our Meloni, but I would also say the whole of Europe, decides to invest more and more billions, in truly incredible amounts, in weapons and cuts healthcare, welfare, social spending, investment in education, schools and nurseries, it is clear that citizens will become critical, it is clear that citizens will question the direction Europe is taking and legitimately believe that it is the wrong direction." This was stated by M5S leader Giuseppe Conte on the sidelines of an event in Catanzaro regarding the message sent by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to the Ambrosetti Forum. Mattarella "also questions the importance of law and international legality, and I believe that Europe, and Italy in particular, has made a historic contribution to the development of international law, especially humanitarian law and international legality. But also for this reason, it is truly incomprehensible, and we remain astonished and dismayed by the fact that today, Italy, with this government, is trampling on international law. Whether it is the individual case of Almasri, where a war criminal is even removed from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and repatriated to Libya with a safe conduct and a state flight. Or whether it is a question of not taking concrete measures, of condemnation, of effective measures against the criminal conduct of the Netanyahu government, which completely tramples on international law – even destroys it – making itself responsible for genocide in front of an Italy that remains helpless and even offers it cover and therefore indirect complicity. Let us ask ourselves some questions. These are important questions from President Mattarella which, Conte emphasises, should make us all reflect.
