Rome, 28 August (LaPresse) – "Once again, we have witnessed the same scenario: images of hundreds of women uploaded without consent to a platform that allows and encourages sexist comments that are harmful to their dignity. Those responsible are discovered and flee, begging for comments and content to be deleted, and the site is shut down, when in all likelihood those responsible have a whole network of similar sites on which they profit every day at the expense of the victims. This is violence, which stems from a culture of rape that is normalised and justified online, and even encouraged by providing specific platforms for venting the worst impulses. We repeat once again, and this is proof of it: harsher penalties are not enough; we need to invest heavily in prevention, through sex and emotional education, because respect and consent must prevail over the patriarchal culture that underpins violence. To all the women whose images have been stolen and ended up on these sites, I offer my solidarity and that of the Democratic Party." So said PD secretary Elly Schlein.
