Rome, 24 August (LaPresse) – "The night of 24 August 2016 will remain forever etched in our minds and hearts, shaken by the terrible 3.36 a.m. earthquake that devastated central Italy and triggered a series of tremors that unfolded their destructive effects over the following months, affecting a huge area: 8,000 square kilometres, four regions and 138 municipalities. On the ninth anniversary of that tragic night, we want to remember those who are no longer with us and once again embrace the families of the victims. We renew our thanks to all the rescuers who, from the very first hours of the tragedy, worked tirelessly to save as many lives as possible and help those in need'. These are the words of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a letter to the daily newspaper “Il Messaggero” on the ninth anniversary of the earthquake in central Italy. “Today, the earthquake zone is the largest construction site in Europe,” Meloni writes, “and this site is not just rebuilding houses, public buildings, churches and factories. It is also rebuilding the lives of an entire community, overwhelmed by an event that has forever changed the face of villages, towns and territories”.
