Rome, 23 August (LaPresse) – "As already stated on several occasions, there will be no Azione lists supporting 5S candidates in the regional elections. Similarly, Azione will not support PD candidates who bow to the programmes imposed by the 5S.‘ This was stated by Azione secretary Carlo Calenda. ’The country,‘ he added, ’needs development, competition, infrastructure and efficiency in public spending. The spectacle we are witnessing in the run-up to these elections is instead the quintessence of political opportunism and a lack of programmes and ideas to improve the functioning of the regions. Everything is reduced, on the right as on the left, to exchanges of positions and personal career paths. The Democratic Party oscillates between prostration before the Five Star Movement and submission to local bosses. These two tendencies often merge. Every trace of reformism has vanished." ‘Once again,’ concludes Calenda, ‘abstention will win and clientelist voting will triumph in the upcoming regional elections. The degeneration of regionalism is a disease that Azione has always fought against. Our commitment remains not to bow to the blackmail of bipopulism and to press ahead with the construction of a strong liberal front in the upcoming general elections.’
