Rome, Aug 19 (LaPresse) – “The deep sorrow for the death of two people, after the Taser had been used on them, must not be exploited solely to fuel yet another campaign of hostility towards law enforcement officers. The judiciary will carry out investigations and assessments, but nothing can call into question the professionalism, balance, and dedication of the police forces. In both specific cases, these were Carabinieri intervening in extremely difficult and dangerous situations. And we must not respect them only when they themselves become victims of such situations,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
“Those who, in an ideological way, criticize the use of the Taser,” Piantedosi added, “must bear in mind that it is an essential tool provided to officers precisely to avoid the use of firearms. The rules of engagement stipulate that it should only be used when facing violent and aggressive individuals who pose a real danger to those present. Citizens’ safety is the primary goal to be pursued. And according to the initial reconstructions, this was exactly the situation faced by the Carabinieri who intervened. Therefore, the controversies against the police forces must be rejected as entirely baseless, prejudiced, and unfounded. To them goes all the gratitude and full support of our Government.”
