Ukraine, Tajani: ‘There is still much to do to reach a peace agreement’

Milan, August 18. (LaPresse) – "It all depends on Moscow. There is still a lot to be done to reach a peace agreement." This is how Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani responded to a question from Affaritaliani about whether he is hopeful that the war in Ukraine could come to an end. This statement comes on the day of the meeting in Washington between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Zelensky, and many European leaders, including Giorgia Meloni. "The continuous Russian bombings of Ukrainian civilian targets are not a sign of genuine willingness," said Tajani. "United Europe, in a strong transatlantic bond, will continue to support Kyiv and its cause to achieve a fair peace. At this stage, assistance to Ukraine will continue. It is clear that no peace agreement can be reached without Kyiv." Tajani added, "Regarding the future, Italy continues to support the need to ensure Ukraine's security (which is also Europe's security) through an agreement mirroring NATO's Article 5, which calls for mutual assistance in case of military aggression. This proposal is gaining increasing support. Naturally, we support the US initiative for a three-way meeting."
