Rome, 16 August (LaPresse) – ‘The government's triumphalist tone regarding yesterday's summit between Trump and Putin is misplaced.’ So said PD secretary Elly Schlein, adding: "Ukraine was not there. The EU was not there. Trump got nothing from Putin, except to rehabilitate him by welcoming him with all honours on the red carpet. They did not reach any agreement on a ceasefire; on the contrary, it was taken off the table.‘ ’The truth, as we have been saying for some time, is that a just peace cannot be negotiated without Ukraine and the European Union at the table,‘ Schlein explained, ’because no one should negotiate on the conditions and territories of a country that has been unjustly invaded. Security guarantees for Ukraine will be essential to building a just peace, and this is where the EU and the US must work together to contribute to a true, just and lasting peace. Now more than ever, the EU needs to play a diplomatic role, speaking with one voice to contribute to this process alongside Ukraine, reaffirming the principles of multilateralism and international law. What is not needed is to reverently wink at the shortcut of bilateral negotiations between two protagonists who ultimately believe they can replace international law with the law of the strongest.
