Rome, 12 August (LaPresse) – "On 12 August 1944, one of the most bloody and brutal massacres of the Second World War took place in Sant'Anna and the hamlets of Stazzema. Over five hundred people – women, elderly people, displaced persons, many children – were slaughtered without mercy and many of their bodies were piled up and burned. A horrific ordeal that has become a symbol of the horrors of war, of the SS's logic of annihilation, and of the dishonourable and despicable complicity of the Fascists." This statement was made by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the 81st anniversary of the massacre of Sant'Anna di Stazzema.
