Middle East, Tajani: ‘Palestine? Let's start the process of creating a state’

Milan, 3 August (LaPresse) – ‘The recognition’ of the State of Palestine "is an important formal act, and we are firmly in favour of it. But today there are no concrete conditions for a Palestinian state. We must build the conditions for a state that recognises Israel and is recognised by Israel. Reciprocity is not secondary. Gaza and the West Bank should be reunified. The United Nations could lead an Arab-led peacekeeping mission to ensure stability in the Strip, and Italy would be ready to participate." This was stated in an interview with Corriere della Sera by Antonio Tajani, Minister of Foreign Affairs. ‘However, we cannot recognise something that does not actually exist. I repeat that recognition must come at the end of a process, when all the constitutional “ingredients” of a state are in place,’ he said. ‘In September, this will be discussed in depth at the UN Assembly, but in the meantime, we must achieve a ceasefire and the release of the hostages.’ In the meantime, Tajani assures that humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza will continue and ‘we are only able to do so because of our relationship with Israel.’
