Rome, July 27 (LaPresse) – "If there were anything capable of stopping Netanyahu, we would have already done and decided it. For now, he does not listen to us. He does not listen to Macron. He does not listen to Washington," but "no resignation. Our words have been firm for months and we reiterate them: Israel’s reaction is disproportionate. Tel Aviv has won the war; there is no reason to continue bombings that kill civilians. We must convince them to stop."
Thus spoke Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with Avvenire. On the Italian government’s refusal to recognize the State of Palestine, he explained: "I do not want to argue, neither with the opposition nor with partner countries. Above all, I understand the shock of public opinion, which pushes for immediate solutions. But I would like everyone to pause and reflect on one fact: after the recognition of Palestine recently made by this or that government, have things changed? Netanyahu does not accept pressure, and this is the reality we have to face."
Finally, responding to a question about accusations against the Italian government for continuing defense cooperation with Israel, Tajani replied: "We have stopped military supplies since October 7, 2023, respecting Italian law. The Ministry of Defense has denied recent newspaper rumors. As for the memorandum, having it or not, as I said, does not stop Netanyahu. Either we start from this fact, or we get caught up in a war of slogans that will not bring peace even one centimeter closer."
