Rome, 19 July (LaPresse) – "The massacre in Via D'Amelio left an indelible mark on Italian history. The deaths of Paolo Borsellino and his escort officers – Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina and Claudio Traina – ordered by the Mafia to bring the democratic institutions to their knees, less than two months after the Capaci attack, were intended to continue, in a subversive manner, the plan of intimidation and fear. Democracy was stronger. The murderers and their instigators have been defeated and condemned'. These were the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. ‘On this day of remembrance,’ he continued, "the emotion for the lives cruelly cut short and the closeness to the victims' families remain as intense as they were thirty-three years ago. The sense of gratitude towards those servants of the state who, with dedication and sacrifice, fought the cancer of the mafia, defending freedom and legality, allowing society to react, is everlasting. The lives of Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone are testimony to and symbols of the dedication of magistrates to the cause of justice. Borsellino did not shy away from his work after the Capaci massacre. He continued to move forward. Honouring his memory means following his lesson of dignity and legality and ensuring that his message reaches younger generations."
