Rome, July 18 (LaPresse) – “We express indignation and deep concern over the statements made by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio during the 'Talk About the Mafia' event. That the head of the Justice Ministry could consider a serving magistrate’s public opinion worthy of intervention by ‘nurses’ or disciplinary action is a serious matter, incompatible with the fundamental principles of a rule-of-law state. Freedom of speech is guaranteed by the Constitution," reads a statement by the Central Executive Committee of the National Magistrates Association (ANM).
"Criticism does not mean insult, and dissent does not equal disrespect," the note continues. "Freedom of expression cannot be constrained or diminished through reform proposals that appear retaliatory, or through inappropriate use of disciplinary tools. Harsh criticism of ministerial decisions should not be mistaken for an affront to authority. Unfortunately, the minister's remarks confirm what the ANM has long denounced: the real aim of the reform seems to be to intimidate, weaken, and ultimately silence the judiciary. We have been, and remain, open to dialogue. But we cannot accept being forced into silence," the committee concludes.
