Tariffs, Foti: "If they stay at 30%, the table is off, but no flexing now"

Rome, July 14 (LaPresse) – "If we really get to 30% tariffs, of course, the table is off, but now is not the time for muscle-flexing. The situation is extremely complex, also because we have to consider other factors: the devaluation of the dollar, energy costs, and the now indispensable need to simplify European regulations." This is what Tommaso Foti, Minister for European Affairs and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), said in an interview with Repubblica.

Regarding the markets, he explains, "We need to avoid triggering a panic effect, which could lead to heavy repercussions. Calm is needed, steady nerves. A balance must be found."

According to Foti, "Trump's letter, let's say an informative one, in the final part shows a willingness to negotiate. Now we must not let ourselves be dragged into the mud by those who think they can start a trade war because it would be very difficult to put the pieces back together afterward."

Meanwhile, the opposition accuses Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of subordinating herself to Trump. "Three months ago, the opposition said: 'Meloni shouldn't negotiate alone, it’s up to Europe.' And indeed, she negotiated on behalf of Europe. Now, they blame Meloni," observes Foti. "The same goes for military spending, the famous 5% target. Everyone signed that commitment, including the socialist leaders allied with the PD. I hope the opposition will play for Italy. Or at least for Europe."
