Rome, July 12 (LaPresse) – "Trump's letters announcing 30% tariffs have arrived. And to think that Meloni had run on a platform of ‘zero’ tariffs, then said that 10% was acceptable, with over 100,000 jobs at risk. An absurd, amateurish negotiation: Meloni and her associates have granted tax cuts to US web giants worth billions, more purchases of American gas (which costs more in bills for citizens and businesses) and increases of $445 billion over 10 years for our military spending. And then there is Lollobrigida, who also put ‘bresaola made with their meat’ on the table in the US. I believe that Trump has only one doubt at this point: that he asked for a 5% increase at NATO and did not dare to ask for more, given the Europeans' willingness to give in. Given these premises, it could only end worse with Meloni and her associates, shrewd strategists who conceded everything immediately without getting practically anything in return. Italy and Europe have failed to command respect, despite the fact that trade between the US and Europe is the most important in the world, moving 4.4 billion goods and services every day. We should have shown unity, threatened counter-tariffs, demanded better conditions, and shown ourselves resolute in seeking alternative markets. In short, we should have stood tall. But with leaders who sell off the national interest to hear ‘Brava Giorgia’ from Washington and get kissed on the head, we are at a dead end." So said M5S leader Giuseppe Conte on social media.
