Rome, June 23 (LaPresse) – “On June 23, 1980, Dr. Mario Amato was assassinated at just 43 years of age, shot in the back of the head by members of a far-right terrorist group. A deputy public prosecutor in Rome, the criminals aimed to halt his investigations into neo-fascist terrorism, which he pursued with determination and sobriety, following in the footsteps of Vittorio Occorsio. Dedicated to a systematic understanding of terrorism, Amato exposed himself to the cowardly ambush of the terrorists.
The memory of his vile murder compels us to firmly condemn violence aimed at the principles of our constitutional state and those who serve it – values of civil coexistence that unite our people. Forty-five years later, the Republic counts him among the heroes of a time that, through sacrifice, reaffirmed the freedom of our institutions, and renews its sentiments of solidarity and closeness to his family, colleagues, and friends who knew and respected him, and who have continually kept his memory alive.”
This was the statement by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
