Rome, June 23 (LaPresse) – No to “a mere subordination to the international political direction of the administration of the United States of America (and Israel) that risks weakening democracy and does not guarantee Europe’s security”; “not to authorize any possible request by the United States to use bases granted for use to the American armed forces present on Italian territory for military attacks against Iran and, in any case, not to provide any type of military support, whether infrastructural or operational, to the United States armed forces”; “to find an effective solution to the issue of gas transit and supply that does not exclude a priori and in the future a possible collaboration with Russia, in order to ensure the containment of electricity and natural gas prices as well as the energy resilience of the European Union, which must be able to adapt to the changing scenarios of the global geopolitical framework without becoming almost monopolistically tied to specific energy sources.”
These are some of the commitments contained in the M5S resolution to be voted on after the statements by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ahead of the European Council.
“Strong opposition,” furthermore, to the European rearmament plan “Rearm Europe”; no to the possibility of using funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) for rearmament and new military expenditures; the commitment to “avert any hypothesis” of increasing defense and security spending in relation to achieving new NATO targets; to “firmly condemn the massive military attack by the United States against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, launched against every rule of international law and potentially aimed at destabilizing the global scenario with catastrophic social and economic consequences, as well as being particularly dangerous for Italy”; and to “immediately initiate the formal denunciation procedure of the agreement, pursuant to article 9, paragraph 3, of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Italian Republic and the Government of the State of Israel.”
