Refugee Day, Mattarella: ‘Serious situation, doing more is a moral duty’

Rome, 20 June (LaPresse) – "The condition of refugees and displaced persons from a growing number of armed conflicts, regional tensions and serious humanitarian crises, also caused by the increasing impact of extreme weather events, is becoming increasingly serious. It is a reality that challenges our consciences and calls us to do more for those who find themselves in fragile and needy conditions in order to affirm the inviolability of every person's dignity. This is not just a humanitarian issue: it is a shared legal and moral responsibility.‘ These were the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on World Refugee Day. ’We renew our duty to remember that the protection of the person, in all circumstances, is a founding principle of the Italian Republic, the heart of the European order and a pillar of international law. Italy, also due to its geographical location, is at the forefront of responding to this global challenge and addressing the root causes of these phenomena,‘ continued the Head of State, who emphasised: ’It is in this context that the shortcomings of the international system, which is unable to fully fulfil its task of protecting these vulnerable people, especially at this time of weakening and fraying relations between states, are measured."
