Rome, 5 June (LaPresse) – "I know that the first reaction to the news of Brusca's release is one of anger and indignation. This is true for everyone, including me. But we must avoid knee-jerk reactions and think things through together. The law that now, after 25 years in prison and four years of probation, considers him free was wanted by Giovanni Falcone, and it is the law that allowed us to raze the leadership of Riina, Provenzano and Messina Denaro, who in the 1980s and 1990s bloodied Palermo, Sicily and Italy. Thanks to the secrets confessed by Brusca, we have been able to prevent further massacres, imprison hundreds of mafia members and sentence them to harsh penalties and hundreds of life sentences. I repeat what I said four years ago: with Brusca, the state has won three times: when it captured him, when it convinced him to cooperate, and now that he is an example to all other mafia members. The only way not to die in prison like Riina, Provenzano and Messina Denaro is to cooperate with the justice system. What is certain is that if he ever commits any kind of crime, he will not receive any leniency. What worries me, and we must ensure that it never happens, is that there is a risk of granting benefits to those who, like Graviano, have never cooperated. The way a state honours its victims is by fighting the mafia and trying to defeat it with all its might and with all the force of the law'. These are the words of Pietro Grasso, former national anti-mafia prosecutor and president of the Fondazione Scintille di Futuro (Foundation for the Sparks of the Future).
