Security decree, Schlein: ‘Unacceptable coercion aimed at fuelling fear’

Rome, 29 May (LaPresse) – ‘You have succeeded in the difficult task of bringing together jurists, magistrates and criminal lawyers.’ These were the words of PD secretary Elly Schlein, speaking in the Chamber of Deputies during the final vote on the Security Decree. ‘You have acted in an unacceptable manner, both in terms of method and substance,’ said Schlein, referring to a measure that ‘contains provisions that take Italy further back than the fascist Rocco Code.’ The Security Decree, she continued, ‘is a snatch from Parliament. You have trampled on our legislative function with a blatant coup in which the government itself has reappropriated this measure by cancelling the bill.’ ‘And you govern with fear instead of fear, fuelling fear for easy consensus as a weapon of mass distraction, which translates into sinister criminal populism,’ she said. You only need slogans and enemies, but don't you dare ever say again that we defend criminals,‘ he says, ’because it was you who sent a Libyan torturer like Almasri to Libya on a state flight."
