Rome, 17 May (LaPresse) – "I am very pleased to welcome German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Palazzo Chigi for the first time since the beginning of his term of office. It was certainly a very open and cordial meeting, but above all a practical and concrete one, which I believe is the most effective refutation of the alleged lack of interest on the part of the new German government in relations with Italy, because the relationship between Italy and Germany, the depth and solidity of the ties between our two nations, are simply impossible to question given the bonds we know exist. This is the reality, regardless of the times we are going through. We are friendly nations, we are allied nations, we are nations united by deep historical and cultural ties, protagonists of European dynamics, founders of the European Union and, of course, on the same side in all multilateral and international forums'. This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her press statements at the end of the bilateral meeting at Palazzo Chigi with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. "We are also the two leading manufacturing economies in Europe, as we know, and our production systems have become increasingly interconnected over the years, so our destinies are obviously very much linked. We are fundamental partners for each other, with trade exceeding €150 billion in 2024, so it is easy to see that if Italy and Germany work together, it is certainly good news for our peoples, but it is also good news for Europe as a whole," she concluded.
