Rome, May 2 (LaPresse) – In an open letter sent to Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Gianni Alemanno and inmate Fabio Falbo – who earned a law degree while in prison – return to the topic of the prison emergency, from overcrowding to denied medical care and the living conditions of inmates, which they describe as "unbearable." "Prisoners are a part of society and a vulnerable one, as the late Pope Francis often reminded us," write Alemanno and Falbo. "Acknowledging the unbearable conditions in which these people live does not mean giving in to a permissive approach that contradicts the principle of the certainty of punishment," they add in the letter, seen by LaPresse. "It simply means making a necessary reconciliation between this principle and the rehabilitative purpose of punishment provided for in Article 27 of our Constitution."
