Rome, April 16 (LaPresse) – ‘I welcome with great satisfaction the proposal for an EU list of safe countries of origin presented by the European Commission and which includes, among others, Bangladesh, Egypt and Tunisia’. This was stated in a note by the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, adding: ‘I consider equally positive the proposal to anticipate the entry into force of some components of the Migration and Asylum Pact, in particular the possibility to designate safe countries of origin with territorial exceptions and for certain categories and to apply the 20% criterion. These are in fact cases that allow the activation of accelerated border procedures for migrants arriving from certain countries, as envisaged by the Italy-Albania Protocol'. For the premier, ‘this is further confirmation of the goodness of the direction traced by the Italian government in recent years and the support of more and more European nations. Italy has played and is playing a decisive role in changing the European approach to governing migration flows. If today, even in Europe, the defence of external borders, the fight against mass irregular immigration, the strengthening of return policy and the implementation of equal partnerships with countries of origin and transit are priorities, this is largely due to Italy's determination and stubbornness. The facts prove that we were right and that we are on the right track,' he concludes.
