Ukraine, Conte: "Italy is paying for a failed strategy, Meloni should apologize"

Rome, February 13 (LaPresse) – "After receiving Biden's pat on the head, Meloni spent months telling us that the goal was victory over Russia, sending weapons indefinitely, making record investments in military spending, and forcing citizens and businesses to bear the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine—from budget cuts to skyrocketing energy costs and bills."

This was stated by M5S leader Giuseppe Conte on social media.

"Now, it’s Trump who picks up the phone to call Putin, opening up to negotiations, while Europe remains sidelined and Italy, as always, stays silent," he added. "The last phone call Meloni picked up was the prank by Russian comedians, just to be clear."

"For two and a half years, we lost the chance to make Italy a central and decisive player in achieving a just peace: others are making the decisions over our heads, while we bear the full economic costs of a war strategy with no end in sight. We now have a new European Commission backed by the bipartisan 'war party,' which only speaks when it comes to weapons. And we have a Prime Minister who supports this Commission and only raises her voice to defend the government from investigations, certainly not to defend Italians."

"Meloni should apologize—not just to those of us, other politicians, or journalists who were accused of being dangerous Putin sympathizers for years simply for calling for peace negotiations with Italy and Europe as key players. She should apologize to the Italian people, who are paying the price of a failed strategy in Ukraine. All for a pat on the head."
