Rome, 9 June (LaPresse) – Corruption, breach of official secrecy and attempts to influence the Court of Auditors’ judgement on the final design of the Messina Strait Bridge. These are the serious allegations levelled by the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office against three individuals at the centre of a new investigation into the infrastructure project. Those under investigation are a former deputy president of the Court of Auditors, who retired last February, a Calabrian lawyer who previously served on the board of directors of Stretto di Messina Spa, and a businessman from Reggio Calabria residing in Rome. The investigation, coordinated by the capital’s investigators and entrusted to the Carabinieri’s ROS unit, led today to searches being carried out in Rome, the province of Reggio Calabria and the province of Frosinone. During the course of the investigation, electronic devices and documentation were seized, which will now be analysed to verify the evidential weight of the charges brought by the investigators. According to reports from the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office, led by Francesco Lo Voi, the three are alleged to have acted in collusion to influence the Court of Auditors’ review of the legality of the approval of the final design for the Strait Bridge. The lawyer and the businessman, again according to the prosecution’s case, allegedly approached the accounting magistrate, promising him support for future appointments in public bodies after his retirement, in exchange for favourable intervention in the procedure concerning the project.
