Rome, 15 May (LaPresse) – "The Privacy Commissioner notes the removal of the television report concerning the discussions between Alberto Stasi and his lawyer and reiterates its firm call on the media to comply with data protection legislation and the Code of Ethics for Journalists, as well as constitutional guarantees. The presence, on an online television platform, of the audio and transcript of conversations between Stasi and his defence lawyer – prohibited by the Code of Criminal Procedure – has also been condemned in recent hours by the Union of Italian Criminal Chambers. With regard to the events in Garlasco, we are witnessing a continuous and morbid sensationalisation of a news story, in contrast to the principle of essential reporting and likely to overstep the necessary respect for the individual and their dignity. This is a limit that must be guaranteed not only to the victim and their family members, but also to the suspects and to all those who, in various capacities, are involved or mentioned in the media coverage. Thus the Privacy Commissioner in a statement in which he explains that ‘he continues to monitor the case, also in light of the complaints received from those concerned, and reserves the right to take further action in relation to the investigations already opened, including against any users of content acquired or disseminated unlawfully’ and points out "that even the reproduction, sharing or further dissemination of content acquired unlawfully may constitute a breach of the regulations on the protection of personal data".
