Naples, victims of a bank robbery: ‘A lifetime's savings in those boxes’

Naples, 17 April (LaPresse) – "In that box were the memories of a lifetime, the sacrifices of a family: jewellery, watches, gold sovereigns. Everything that a family usually tries to pass down through the generations. It’s not so much the financial value, but the value of the memories.” Speaking in the aftermath of the robbery at the Credit Agricole branch in Piazza Medaglie d’Oro in Naples is one of the holders of the safety deposit boxes that were broken into and emptied by the robbers. The haul from the robbery has yet to be quantified, but what is certain is that around thirty safety deposit boxes were stolen by the thieves, who managed to cover their tracks by escaping through the sewer system via a hole cut in the branch floor. “You can get into this bank just like a supermarket,” is the criticism from an account holder who rushed to the branch this morning to check whether her belongings were among those stolen. “I didn’t think that, despite the large police presence, they would manage to escape so easily through the sewers,” she adds.
