Rome, 10 April (LaPresse) – Final sentence handed down to Gabriele Natale Hjorth. The Court of Cassation has declared the defence’s appeal against the sentence inadmissible, making the 10 years, 11 months and 25 days imposed on the young man for aiding and abetting the murder of Carabinieri Deputy Brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega – who was stabbed to death on the night of 25–26 July 2019 in the Prati district of Rome – irrevocable. The judges of the First Criminal Section, however, quashed and remanded the third appeal judgment solely in respect of the civil aspects and the assessment of the aggravating circumstance relating to the status of public officials held by the victim and his colleague Andrea Varriale. This decision is in line with the request made earlier in the day by the Attorney General’s Office, which had urged that the appeal be declared inadmissible. The third second-instance trial, which concluded last July with the same sentence, had been ordered after the Court of Cassation had quashed and remitted the second appeal judgment, limited to the sentencing, whilst rendering Hjorth’s criminal liability definitive. The 15-year and 2-month sentence for Finnegan Lee Elder, the perpetrator of the attack who stabbed the carabiniere eleven times, is already final. Hjorth is represented by lawyers Francesco Petrelli and Fabio Alonzi.
