Social media, Valditara: ‘Protecting young people from online risks, government working on the issue’

Milan, 5 April (LaPresse) – "There is a sense of unease that is largely linked to the world of the internet and social media. All experts now agree: young people are isolating themselves in a virtual world that makes contact with reality problematic; they are entering a world often characterised by aggression, hatred, vulgarity and incitement to abuse, not to mention the risks of the dark web. “As a government, we must protect young people from the dangers of social media and the web.” So said Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara in an interview with “La Stampa”. “We are studying the most technically effective solution to protect young people from the risks of social media and the web,” adds Valditara, emphasising that “the government will present a proposal designed to prevent the circumvention of a ban”. It is a process, Valditara adds, ‘of care and attention for young people that we have already initiated, among the first in the world, when we banned the use of mobile phones at school, introduced parental controls in the Caivano decree and prohibited access to pornographic websites for under-18s’. The government ‘is aware of the issues associated with forms of prohibition such as those implemented in other countries; we are working to present a proposal that delivers technically effective results’, added Valditara, who says he is ‘optimistic because viable solutions exist and we are determined to adopt them’.
