Naples, 19 March (LaPresse) – The paediatric heart transplant programme at the AORN Ospedale dei Colli, which includes the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, remains suspended and will not resume “until it has been confirmed that all the necessary organisational, professional and safety requirements are fully met, a process to be completed within 180 days”. This is the decision taken by the Campania Regional Council, which, at today’s meeting, examined and approved, amongst other things, a series of measures in the social and health sectors. Following the note addressed to the Directorate-General for Health Protection requesting an extraordinary inspection in the wake of the case of little Domenico Caliendo, the Regional Council is proceeding with the transfer of the technical and administrative functions of the Regional Transplant Centre from Monaldi to the Region’s Directorate-General for Health Protection. Furthermore, the Regional Executive has ordered that Monaldi’s paediatric heart transplant programme ‘be suspended and not resumed until the full fulfilment of all necessary organisational, professional and safety conditions has been verified, to be carried out within 180 days’. Finally, the Directorate-General for Health Protection is required to report to the Regional Council on the findings of the inspection carried out, including with the involvement of the relevant ministerial departments, in order to enable subsequent decisions regarding the possible resumption of the programme.
