Milan, 24 February (LaPresse) – The Italian Data Protection Authority has issued an urgent and immediate ban on Amazon Italia Logistica srl processing the personal data of over 1,800 workers employed at its Passo Corese (RI) facility. The ban, the Authority specifies, concerns information collected – systematically, throughout the duration of the employment relationship and stored for up to 10 years after its termination – through a platform connected to the attendance tracking system, accessible to numerous managers. The information, recorded on the platform following interviews with workers immediately after their return from a period of absence, refers to specific medical conditions suffered (Chron's syndrome, herniated disc, pacemaker wearer), participation in strikes and trade union activities (including references to alleged misuse of absences), as well as personal family and private data (terminally ill father, sister with brain cancer, marital separations). All this, the Authority emphasises, is in violation of the legislation that prohibits employers from processing data that is not relevant for the purpose of assessing the professional aptitude of employees. Amazon Italia Logistica will also have to stop processing data collected through four cameras located near bathrooms and break areas reserved for workers. With the same measure, the Authority has finally prohibited Amazon from processing data used unlawfully through the same platform, if it is used in the company's other logistics centres in Italy in a manner similar to that ascertained.
