Rome, 6 November (LaPresse) – The Attorney General's Office at the Venice Court of Appeal has decided to drop its appeal against Filippo Turetta's life sentence. This was announced by Nicodemo Gentile, Piero Coluccio and Stefano Tigani, lawyers for the family of Giulia Cecchettin, who was killed at the age of 22 on 11 November 2023. ‘Following the defendant Filippo Turetta's decision not to appeal, we consider this decision to be consistent, fair and fully acceptable,’ they explained in a statement. "In fact, the defendant's waiver makes the first-instance sentence final and crystallises, without any margin for doubt, the existence of the aggravating circumstance of premeditation: one of the most serious and insidious circumstances provided for by our legal system. This aggravating circumstance takes on even more dramatic significance in a murder case characterised, in fact, by abject, archaic and despicable motives, the expression of a distorted view of emotional bonds and an idea of possession that has nothing to do with love and respect. The Cecchettin family has faced every stage of the trial with deep pain, but also with extraordinary dignity. Today, they feel the need to turn the page, to break the judicial cycle that inevitably continued to reopen the wound. With the definitive confirmation of the serious responsibilities of the defendant Filippo Turetta, one essential task now remains: to transform pain into awareness, so that society – starting with the youngest members – can recognise, prevent and combat the deep roots of gender-based violence.
