Milan, Aug. 28 (LaPresse) – The number of confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection in Italy has risen to 430 (compared to 351 in the previous bulletin), with 27 deaths. This is reported in the seventh surveillance bulletin published today and attached. Among the confirmed cases, 193 presented in the neuro-invasive form (8 in Piedmont, 12 in Lombardy, 14 in Veneto, 1 in Friuli Venezia Giulia, 1 in Liguria, 13 in Emilia-Romagna, 62 in Lazio, 2 in Molise, 64 in Campania, 2 in Basilicata, 5 in Calabria, 1 in Sicily, 8 in Sardinia), 38 were asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors, 193 fever cases, 3 asymptomatic cases and 3 symptomatic cases. A total of 27 deaths have been reported (1 in Piedmont, 1 in Lombardy, 1 in Emilia-Romagna, 11 in Lazio, 11 in Campania, 2 in Calabria). The case fatality rate, calculated on the neuro-invasive forms reported and confirmed so far, stands at 13.9% (20% in 2018, 14% in 2024). During the same period, 1 case of Usutu virus was reported in Lazio, in the Province of Latina.
