Milan, August 23 (LaPresse) – "Extreme tensions last night at the Vibo Valentia Prison, where in the section for problematic inmates, three detainees attacked staff, brandishing razor blades and blunt objects, and throwing boiling oil at them. This created major operational difficulties for the few officers present, to the point that others—off duty and resting in the barracks after working the morning shift—had to be called back in for the night shift. The outcome: five officers injured and bruised, requiring treatment at the city's emergency room. The situation is even more serious considering that last night’s events are not isolated, but have become routine at the Vibo prison," said Francesca Bernardi, territorial secretary of Uilpa Penitentiary Police.
"Although the Vibo Valentia prison does not suffer from overcrowding as severely as others in the country—with 416 inmates against a capacity of 406—it is marked by the coexistence of four different detention circuits and, most importantly, by a chronic shortage of Penitentiary Police staff, with only 190 officers assigned where at least 288 are needed, according to the prison administration department itself," explained the Uilpa PP secretary.
