Pope: ‘The world bears the scars of conflict; peace is not merely a human achievement’

Rome, 22 August (LaPresse) – "Our world bears the deep scars of conflict, inequality, environmental degradation and a growing sense of spiritual disconnection. However, in the midst of these challenges, we remember that peace is not merely a human achievement, but a sign of the Lord's presence among us. This is both a promise and a task, for Christ's followers are called to become artisans of reconciliation: to face division with courage, indifference with compassion, and to bring healing where there have been wounds." Pope Leo XIV wrote this in a message sent to participants in the Ecumenical Week in Stockholm (18-24 August 2025) on the centenary of the 1925 Ecumenical Meeting. Referring to that meeting, Prevost recalled the commitment of Archbishop Nathan Söderblom, then Lutheran Archbishop of Uppsala, who ‘brought together 600 Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant leaders’ because he was ‘convinced that “service unites”’.
