Teramo, 13 August (LaPresse) – ‘It is essential to avoid any kind of alarmism. In the meantime, it is important that the infection occurred elsewhere, and in any case, we are ready to take all necessary countermeasures.’ This was stated by the manager of the Teramo Local Health Authority, Maurizio Di Giosia, announcing that a man who contracted the West Nile virus in Frosinone has been admitted to the Giuseppe Mazzini Hospital in Teramo. He arrived with persistent fever, asthenia and arthralgia and has been admitted to the infectious diseases ward under protective conditions. The patient is a frail 62-year-old man who arrived in the province of Teramo already showing symptoms and was immediately admitted to the provincial capital's hospital. “The Teramo Local Health Authority responded immediately thanks to the collaboration and fruitful synergy between the Infectious Diseases Department of Teramo, headed by Antonella D'Alonzo, the Immuno-Haematology and Transfusion Service and the Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health Service, headed by Sofia Chiatamone Ranieri and Marina Danese, respectively,” concluded the Director General. "As a region and as a local health authority, we are providing an immediate and comprehensive health response, as we did in the past with Covid-19, dengue fever and monkeypox: the first cases at regional level have also occurred in Teramo,‘ said Regional Health Councillor Nicoletta Verì, adding that ’Today's is the first case of West Nile virus taken on in Abruzzo, which since 2020 has already set up an inter-institutional committee with a plan for monitoring, surveillance and management of arbovirus-related diseases," concluded Verì.
