Prisons, Ministry denies Ombudsman: ‘No suicide alert’

Rome, August 11 (LaPresse) – “There is no suicide emergency as suggested this morning by the Guarantor. The current number, although disheartening, is below the national average of the last three years,” reads a statement from the Ministry of Justice.
“In the first eight months of 2025, 48 suicides were recorded in penitentiary facilities, with a monthly average of six,” the note continues. “This figure certainly calls for broad strategic measures, on which the Ministry is strongly and daily committed. That said, it is necessary to point out – to allow for a proper reading of the data – that, despite being distressing and demanding tireless effort, the number is still below the monthly average inherited by the Government in 2022, which saw 84 suicides in a year.”
