Health: liver failure caused by heat, 14-year-old saved in Turin

Milan, 3 August. (LaPresse) – Life-saving intervention at the Molinette hospital in Turin for a 14-year-old Greek boy suffering from acute liver failure caused by heatstroke. Suffering from “anhidrosis”, a rare congenital disease that prevents the body from producing sweat, the boy was hiking with some friends near the city of Ioannina, in northern Greece. Due to the high ambient temperature and physical exertion, the boy's body temperature rose to 42 degrees, causing him to lose consciousness and fall into a coma. His young companions immediately called for help. An ambulance arrived at the scene and transported the boy to the nearest medical facility, where he was cooled using water and ice packs. Despite this, he suffered convulsions and did not regain consciousness. He was then taken to the emergency department at Ioannina Hospital, where he was intubated. Once stabilised, he was transferred to the nearest paediatric intensive care unit in Patras.
