Milan, 28 July (LaPresse) – As of 30 June 2025, there were 62,728 people in prison in Italy, an increase of 1,248 compared to the previous year. With a regulatory capacity of 51,276 places and over 4,500 beds unavailable, the actual overcrowding rate stands at 134.3%. In 62 institutions, overcrowding exceeds 150%, and in eight cases even 190% – as in San Vittore, Foggia, Lodi and Regina Coeli in Rome. In 35.3% of the institutions visited, there were cells where 3 square metres of floor space per person were not guaranteed. This is what emerges from the mid-year report by Antigone, the result of 86 visits to Italian prisons carried out over the last 12 months by the association's observatory.
