Milan, 21 July (LaPresse) – ‘Everything I have done during my two terms as mayor has always and exclusively been based on what I believed to be in the interests of the citizens. There is not a single action that can be attributed to my personal gain. My hands are clean.’ These were the words of Milan's mayor, Beppe Sala, as he opened his address to the City Council. ‘I am here with you at a delicate moment, with the fate of many people who have believed in this political adventure hanging in the balance. These are confusing days in which everything seems to be becoming obscure, certainties seem to be wavering and often it seems that even the most familiar faces are becoming blurred,’ added Sala. He then clarified: ‘I seriously considered not continuing. I have given everything I have to Milan for 16 years. It is not for my personal satisfaction or ambition. Today, I am more motivated than ever to continue in my role.’
