Milan, 14 July (LaPresse) – Contamination DNA has been found on the gauze used to collect material from Chiara Poggi's mouth. LaPresse has learned this from sources informed about the preliminary investigation ordered by Pavia magistrate Daniela Garlaschelli and entrusted to forensic expert Denise Albani. The so-called “Unknown 3”, the male DNA profile on the gauze used to collect material from Chiara Poggi's mouth, is compatible with that of the assistant to the medical examiner Dario Ballardini, who performed the autopsy on the body of the 26-year-old woman killed on 13 August 2007. According to the reconstruction, no actual oral swab was taken from Poggi's mouth, as was done on other parts of the body, but the gauze was used to collect material for comparison with the results of the analysis of blood traces at the crime scene in Garlasco. Of the two usable samples from the gauze, one matched the medical examiner's assistant at 80% in the repeat tests carried out today. The second sample shows both the Y profile of the professional and another profile in what is described as an “infinitesimal” quantity, not attributable to violent action in the victim's pharyngeal area and caused by “contamination”. The most likely reconstruction is that this occurred in the autopsy room while handling the gauze or touching it with objects that were themselves contaminated.
