Vatican City (Vatican), June 30 (LaPresse) – "Today we witness with desolation the unjust use of hunger as a weapon of war. Starving the population is a very cheap way of waging war. That is why today, when most conflicts are not fought by regular armies but by groups of armed civilians with few resources, burning lands, stealing livestock, and blocking aid are tactics increasingly used by those seeking to control entire disarmed populations."
Thus spoke Pope Leo XIV in a message sent to participants of the 44th Session of the FAO Conference. "In this type of conflict, the primary military targets become water supply networks and communication routes. Farmers are unable to sell their products in environments threatened by violence, and inflation is skyrocketing," Prevost emphasizes. "This leads to a huge number of people succumbing to the scourge of hunger and death, with the aggravating factor that, while civilians are weakened by misery, the political leadership fattens itself on corruption and impunity. That is why it is time for the world to adopt clear, recognizable, and consensual limits to sanction these abuses and prosecute those who cause and carry them out."
