Palermo, June 19 (LaPresse) – "For none of the three SAR events on August 1, 2, and 9, 2019, was the Italian State obliged to coordinate search and rescue operations or to grant the PoS (place of safety)," stated the Palermo court in the reasoning behind the acquittal of former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini from the charges of kidnapping and refusal of official duties in the Open Arms trial, which concluded last December 20.
"It must be ruled out," the court wrote, "that granting a PoS constituted a legal obligation for Italy and, consequently, for then Interior Minister Salvini, the failure to fulfill which could qualify as refusal of official acts or as grounds for the crime of kidnapping."
