Rome, 29 May (LaPresse) – As of 30 April 2025, there were 62,445 people detained in Italian prisons. Compared to this number, the regulatory capacity is 51,280 places, a figure that is actually slightly lower than at the end of 2024, meaning that the official overcrowding rate would be 121.8%. However, at least 4,500 places are unavailable due to unavailability or renovation, meaning that the actual average overcrowding rate is at least 133%. This is according to the annual report on prison conditions published by the Antigone Association.
