Pope Leo XIV: ‘Young people are a volcano of life, but they need help’

Vatican City (Vatican), 15 May (LaPresse) – "The young people of our time, like those of every age, are a volcano of life, energy, feelings and ideas. This can be seen in the wonderful things they are capable of doing in so many fields. However, they also need help to grow in harmony and overcome what, albeit in a different way than in the past, can still hinder their healthy development." These were the words of Pope Leo XIV during an audience with the Brothers of the Christian Schools. If, for example, in the seventeenth century, the use of Latin was an insurmountable barrier to communication for many, today there are other obstacles to be faced. We think of the isolation caused by widespread relational models increasingly marked by superficiality, individualism and emotional instability; the spread of patterns of thought weakened by relativism; the prevalence of rhythms and lifestyles in which there is not enough room for listening, reflection and dialogue, at school, in the family, sometimes among peers, with the loneliness that ensues. These are demanding challenges, but we too, like Saint John Baptist de La Salle, can use them as springboards to explore new paths, develop new tools and adopt new languages with which to continue to touch the hearts of our students, helping and encouraging them to face every obstacle with courage in order to give the best of themselves in life, according to God's plan. In this sense, the attention you give in your schools to the training of teachers and to the creation of educational communities in which the teaching effort is enriched by the contribution of all is commendable. I encourage you to continue along this path.
