Palermo, Feb. 6 (LaPresse) – One migrant was found dead of drowning on the beach of the Rabbit Island in Lampedusa, a second died of hypothermia after being transported to the island's polyclinic. Both are Bengali nationals and are between the ages of 20 and 30. A third was rescued by doctors from severe hypothermia. All three arrived aboard a nine-meter metal barge that left the Libyan coast in recent days. There were 44 people on board, according to police findings. The disembarkation took place early in the morning under a deluge and poor sea conditions. Police intercepted the migrants in the street shortly after they landed on the beach. Missing from the roll call were the two victims, who remained beside the boat. It was the migrants themselves (Bengalis, Egyptians, Pakistanis, and Moroccans) who reported to officers that two of their fellow travelers were sick. Arriving at the beach, police officers and medics found the drowned man's body, while along the path was the other young man in obvious hypothermia. Medics recovered him and took him to the polyclinic. The medics tried hard to save him but were unable to restart his heart.
