Genoa, January 13 (LaPresse) – A request to review the conviction of Mario Vanni has been filed with the Genoa Court of Appeal. Vanni was accused of being one of the "compagni di merende" (snack companions) convicted as perpetrators of four double murders among the 16 attributed to the "Monster of Florence." The request was submitted by Vanni’s nephews. Vanni, sentenced to life imprisonment, passed away in 2009. The case has been transferred to Genoa due to territorial jurisdiction over reviews of cases from the Florence court.

According to the judicial findings from the trials, Vanni was one of the perpetrators of the murders alongside Pietro Pacciani, a farmer from Mercatale identified as the material executor. Pacciani was convicted in the first trial but acquitted on appeal. He died in 1998, just before his second appeal trial. In the coming months, a judging panel will decide on the request to review Vanni’s trial. If granted, the case will be reopened in the Genoa Court of Appeal.
