Rome, January 9 (LaPresse) – An international team of scientists claims to have successfully drilled one of the oldest ice cores in Antarctica, reaching nearly 2 miles deep to the Antarctic bedrock and extracting ice that is at least 1.2 million years old. The project was completed in January as part of a European-funded initiative called Beyond Epica. Analysis of the ancient ice is expected to provide a record of changes in Earth’s atmosphere and climate. These data could shed light on how glacial and ice age cycles have evolved, as well as how atmospheric carbon cycles have altered Earth’s climate.
