Rome, 24 June (LaPresse) – A heatwave alert has been issued in Rome. The warning comes from Legambiente, which describes the city as “increasingly in the red zone”, with “a climate that now resembles that of the tropics”. According to the latest available data – explains the association, citing Istat surveys – ‘the average annual temperature in Rome has reached 18.7 degrees Celsius, an increase of 3.1 degrees compared to the 1971-2000 average’; therefore “more than double the national average increase” of “1.48 degrees in the pre-industrial period”. There are also “increasingly frequent tropical nights, during which the minimum temperature does not fall below 20 degrees”, while “the heat island effect marks a difference of 6.5 degrees between the central areas and the eastern quadrant of the city thanks to green areas”. Another cause for alarm, Legambiente continues, is ‘the extreme weather events that have reached 89 in the capital between 2015 and 2024. Rome is in fact the top municipality in Italy for extreme weather events’.
