Milan, May 8 (LaPresse) – April 2025 was “the second warmest April globally on record, with an ERA5 global average surface air temperature of 14.96°C, 0.60°C above the 1991–2020 April average,” according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, implemented on behalf of the European Commission by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. April 2025 “was 1.51°C warmer than the estimated average for the 1850–1900 period used to define the pre-industrial level and marks the 21st month out of the last 22 in which global average surface air temperature exceeded the pre-industrial level by more than 1.5°C,” Copernicus explains. “The average land temperature in Europe for April 2025 was 9.38°C, 1.01°C above the 1991–2020 average for the same month, making it the sixth warmest April ever recorded in Europe. The sea surface temperature (SST) between 60°S and 60°N for April 2025 was 20.89°C, the second highest value ever recorded for this month, just 0.15°C below the April 2024 record. Arctic sea ice extent was 3% below average, the sixth lowest monthly extent for April in the 47-year satellite record, following four months of record-low values for the time of year. In April 2025, much of Central Europe, the UK, southern Fennoscandia, and parts of Eastern Europe experienced drier-than-average conditions,” Copernicus also reports.
