Terra dei fuochi, ECtHR ruling: ‘Within two years Italy must take measures’

Naples, Jan. 30 (LaPresse) – Within two years the Italian State will have to introduce measures to guarantee health protection for the citizens of the so-called Terra dei fuochi, an area straddling the provinces of Naples and Caserta in which the phenomenon of illegal burial and burning of waste, including toxic waste, has occurred over the past decades. This is what the European Court of Human Rights ruled in its judgment condemning the Italian state for failing to take adequate measures to protect the inhabitants of the Terra dei Fuochi, where an increase in cancer rates and groundwater pollution has been recorded. The European Court of Human Rights ruled on the appeal instituted by lawyer Valentina Centonze and presented by 66 citizens and five associations in the area.
